Grade Comparison
Silicon and copper content decide most of the behaviour.
| Alloy | Si | Cu | Character | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A380 | 7.5–9.5% | 3.0–4.0% | Excellent castability, good strength | General housings, brackets |
| ADC12 | 9.6–12% | 1.5–3.5% | Japanese grade, near-equivalent to A380 | Electronics, automotive |
| A360 | 9.0–10.0% | ≤0.6% | Better corrosion resistance and ductility | Outdoor, marine, wet service |
| A413 | 11.0–13.0% | ≤1.0% | Best pressure tightness | Leak-tight housings, hydraulic parts |
| B390 | 16–18% | 4.0–5.0% | High wear resistance, low ductility | Pulleys, pump bodies |
How to Choose
- Default to A380. Cheapest part that will work.
- A360 for corrosion. Outdoor and marine parts.
- A413 for pressure tightness. Anything that must pass a leak test.
- B390 for wear. Sliding contact, expect faster tool wear.
Heat Treatment
T5 (cooled from casting and artificially aged) improves strength with minimal dimensional movement. T6 gives higher strength but risks blistering in high-pressure castings because of trapped gas.
Secondary vs Primary
Secondary (recycled) alloys are standard for A380 and ADC12 and are what most quotations assume. Primary alloys give tighter chemistry and better ductility at higher cost.
