Grade Comparison
Four alloys cover almost every zinc die casting job.
| Alloy | Common name | Character | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zamak 3 | ZnAl4 | Best castability and dimensional stability | Hardware, housings, decorative parts |
| Zamak 5 | ZnAl4Cu1 | ~10% stronger than Zamak 3, slightly less ductile | Structural brackets |
| Zamak 2 | ZnAl4Cu3 | Highest strength, lowest ductility | Bearings, wear parts |
| ZA-8 | ZnAl8Cu1 | Hot-chamber castable, good bearing properties | Bushings, small gears |
| ZA-12 | ZnAl11Cu1 | Better bearing properties, cold-chamber cast | Higher-load wear parts |
Why Zamak 3 Is the Default
Zamak 3 balances everything: it fills thin sections, holds tolerance after ejection, machines cleanly and plates well. Unless your part carries structural load, it is almost always the right starting point.
Plating and Finishing
Zinc parts take chrome, nickel, brass and gold-tone plating with a finish quality that aluminum cannot approach. That is why decorative hardware and sanitary fittings are zinc rather than aluminum.
Limitations Worth Knowing
- Weight. About 2.5 times denser than aluminum.
- Temperature. Strength drops above roughly 100 °C.
- Creep. Constant load at elevated temperature deforms zinc over time.
